🇫🇮 Finland
Finnish Backgammon Association was established in 1974. The golden decades were in 70s and 80s, when the national Finnish championship tournaments had over 100 players in main. Celebrities like actors, formula 1 drivers, singers and tv personalities used to take part in the tournaments and they had a nice glamorous flare! Nowadays we have around 70 members. We just updated our tournament structure and now we offer 3 separate flights in every tournament: main, intermediate and beginners. We have 5 tournaments per year in the most populated cities in the southern Finland: Helsinki capital region, Tampere and Turku. Around 85 % of the active players live in those cities. Finnish Open held in May is the only international tournament. It has bigger entry fees (in 2026: 350 € main, 140 € intermediates and 80 € beginners (2 meals included to everyone)) than our other tournaments. For many years it was customary to have the Finnish Open annually and it was also the national championship tournament. However in 2019 we decided to separate Finnish Open and the national championship tournament. The reason behind this was to make it possible for more players to compete for the national gold medal by dropping the fee to 1/4 of the previous fee. Finnish Open costs around 300-400€ and the Finnish national championship around 100€. Since then the national championship tournament has had around 32 players in main. We have an internet tournament "Heroes cup" that has monthly competitions and the winners of those go to the final tournament. It is a free roll tournament for members. Since joining WBGF and WBIF in 2023 we have had Finnish online championship tournaments. We have had the national championship tournament for school children since 2018. Ages can range from 7 to 19 years old. Three separate flights. It has been the biggest tournament in terms of attendance averaging 50+ players. We have annual meetings in January or February where we elect the board for one year. Membership fees are 30 € for main and intermediates and 10 € for beginners. Simo Huovinen has been the chairman since 2018. We have week / bi-monthly / monthly tournaments in Helsinki (2), Tampere, Turku and Jyväskylä. Finnish players have taken part in Monte Carlo WC for decades and finally in 2025 Timo Väätäinen won it! Finnish teams have won the team world championship held in Monte Carlo 4 times: 1990, 2001, 2003 and 2004. Petri Pietilä was in every team, Teppo Salo three times, Matti Haaksila twice and Timo Väätäinen, Antti Lehmusvirta and Jorma Vuoksenmaa once. As I'm writing this there are 7 Finnish players in BMAB of which 3 are grand masters: Timo Väätäinen (G2), Matti Tienari (G3) and Sampo Niskanen (G3).
🇬🇷 Greece
Some sort of board game with the use of checkers and dice has been played in Greece from the 2nd millennium BCE, as mentioned in Homer's "Iliad". "Tavli", as it is widely known in Greece, has been extremely popular since the Byzantine era and traditionally consists of three distinct variations, one of which is exactly what the international community acknowledges as "backgammon", but without the use of any doubling cube. Modern backgammon appeared during the 1990s, through the efforts of Antonis Maltezopoulos, who laid the foundations of our community, followed by individual initiatives by Manos Mastorakis, Giorgos Kleitsas, Costas Chiotinis and others. The Greek Backgammon Federation was founded in 2012 and its activity spread soon, with five new clubs now operating, namely SAKA Athens, SATO Karditsa, Mind Games Holargos, AT Larissa and Ellanios Crete. They jointly organize the Greek Championship, the Cup of Greece and the Clubs Championship every year.
